Public: What you need to know

National Pipeline Mapping System

The National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS) allows you to look up major gas transmission and oil pipelines county by county. This way you can see if there is a pipeline in your area. Please note, however, that smaller gathering and distribution pipelines, like the ones that deliver gas to your home, are not included in the system.

NPMS data is for reference purposes only. It is not a substitute for contacting a one-call center prior to excavation activities.

Always call 811 before you dig.

To find out if a transmission pipeline is on or near your property, you can:

  • Check the NPMS Public Map Viewer at www.npms.phmsa.dot.gov;
  • Look for pipeline markers -- these are signs, located at regular intervals, that include information about the transmission pipeline operator;
  • Read any mailings you receive from pipeline companies -- if you get them, that means there’s a pipeline in your area.
