INGAA board of directors affirms commitment to responsible pipeline construction

The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America has long stood for safe and responsible construction and operation of natural gas pipelines. Recognizing the increase in pipeline-construction activity, particularly in areas unaccustomed to energy pipelines, the INGAA board of directors on July 18 formally and unanimously affirmed its commitment to the highest levels of safety and integrity in the pipeline construction process.

INGAA is comprised of 26 members, representing the vast majority of the interstate natural gas transmission pipeline companies in the U.S. and in Canada. INGAA’s members operate nearly 200,000 miles of pipelines, and serve as an indispensable link between natural gas producers and consumers. The list of INGAA members is available on the next page.

By endorsing INGAA’s “Commitment to Responsible Pipeline Construction,” each of INGAA’s member companies embraced the following core principles: 1) ensuring safe and reliable pipeline construction; 2) caring for communities and landowners; and 3) preserving environmental resources; and 4) respecting regulations.

“These principles are designed to recognize the ultimate reason our projects are built is to serve the needs of people,” said Diane Leopold, INGAA chair and president of Dominion Energy’s Gas Infrastructure Group. “It’s not just about the Americans who use natural gas to heat their homes and the businesses that use it to fuel their operations. It’s about our companies respecting every person impacted by a project.”

“INGAA members are committed to leading an industry that builds and operates in a way that respects the environment and the communities in which we do business,” said INGAA President and CEO Don Santa. “That means ensuring that communities and landowners are always treated with respect, that our members use construction techniques that minimize environmental impacts, and we continue our Integrity Management Continuous Improvement efforts, with a goal of zero pipeline incidents.”

INGAA’s construction commitments, available here, include such things as continuing to ensure quality construction materials, continuing to test all new pipelines before they go into service, continuing to work collaboratively with landowners and other stakeholders, and continuing to minimize impacts to natural resources.
